Flavio Cobolli, one of tennis’ brightest rising stars, has reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final after a gritty win over veteran Marin Cilic at Wimbledon.
In what proved to be his toughest test yet at this year’s tournament, Cobolli battled through a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3) victory, potentially setting up a dream clash with his idol, Novak Djokovic.
Seeded 22nd, the Italian has captivated fans with his diverse shot-making and entertaining flair throughout his run at SW19.
The 23-year-old remained composed against Cilic—a former Wimbledon finalist and 2014 US Open champion—though he did drop his first set of the tournament in the intense encounter.
Following a breakthrough season in 2024 that saw him climb from outside the top 100 to the world’s top 30, Cobolli is now enjoying his finest Grand Slam showing to date, having never previously advanced beyond the third round.
His win also marks the start of what could be a landmark day for Italian tennis, with Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, and Jannik Sinner all competing in the last 16.
If all three secure victories, it would be the first time in history that three Italian men have reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.
Sonego is set to face American 10th seed Ben Shelton, while Sinner will go up against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov later on Monday.
