An American sprinter endured an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction when his shorts slipped, exposing him during a race.
Chris Robinson, an American sprinter, experienced an unexpected and embarrassing wardrobe malfunction during the 400m hurdles at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic. Just 150 meters into the race, his shorts failed to contain his genitals, exposing him live to a global audience.
Viewers and commentators were stunned as the 24-year-old, fully aware of the mishap, repeatedly attempted to adjust his clothing mid-stride while still clearing hurdles.
“He hit that ninth hurdle hard. He was having an equipment failure there — probably the politest way to put it,” noted former English athlete and commentator Tim Hutchings on the international feed, per News.com.au.
“That’s a brilliant run by the American to be constantly adjusting certain parts of his equipment and possibly his anatomy down the home straight there around that top bend,” Hutchings added.
Despite the awkward moment, Robinson remained composed and powered through the final stretch, winning the race in 48.05 seconds — just one-tenth shy of his personal best. He narrowly beat Brazil’s Matheus Lima by six hundredths of a second, with Czech athlete Vit Muller finishing third at 48.41 seconds.
Crossing the finish line, Robinson celebrated with an acrobatic rolling somersault before lying on the track, smiling in relief. “That’s a very relieved Chris Robinson,” Hutchings remarked as TV producers hurried to issue an apology for an uncensored replay that revealed the mishap.
“Perhaps in a race every two or three years, you see scenes like this from men and women with parts of their equipment failing,” Hutchings continued. “It can make it very awkward, but that was a stunning effort to stay out in front with all that going on.”
